I don’t live in Exeter, can I submit a view?
You may submit a view if you live in central Exeter, wider Exeter, or in any city in the World. Go to the UPLOAD YOUR VIEW page and you will be prompted to fill in a box that asks you where your view is from.
I don’t live in a city, can I submit a view?
This project is focusing on a contemporary portrait of a city centre, therefore we would like to restrict images submitted to those taken from domestic accommodation within a city.
I have uploaded my view onto your site but it hasn’t appeared yet. Why is this?
The photograph and words submitted to the site are moderated before they appear within the gallery. This may take a up to couple of days depending on where we are. We will not post any materials that we deem to be offensive or defamatory, and we will not post any materials that we believe infringes the privacy of your neighbours.
How will you use the picture and words that I upload to your website?
Your picture will be added to a growing gallery of images in the creation of a portrait of the city. The materials that you submit will be used by Blind Ditch during the devising process of ‘This City’s Centre’ and there is a chance that they will appear in the live performance.
Who owns the copyright to my picture once I submit it?
Copyright of the photographs submitted to the This City’s Centre website shall remain with the photographer. The Photographer grants to Blind Ditch the right to reproduce photographs by any mechanical or digital means for artistic, publicity or promotional purposes connected to the This City’s Centre project, but not otherwise. Any other reproduction will require the Photographer’s prior agreement in writing.
Why do you ask me for an email address when I want to submit a photograph?
We may wish to contact you to ask if you’d like to become one of the 20 people we would like to talk to and discuss filming your view and undertaking an interview. Unless you also sign up to our mailing list, we will only use your email address for this purpose. We will not purposefully pass your email address on to anyone else.
How can I nominate myself to be one of the 20 people you interview?
By submitting a photograph of your view and letting us know that you are interested in the box you fill in. Also by sharing your view you are expressing interest in being approached.
How will you choose the 20 people?
We will contact people via the website dependent on the pictures that are submitted. We will make contact via the email address supplied. We will arrange a time to speak on the telephone, or to meet you in person to discuss your view and your thoughts about it. We will choose 20 contrasting views from people who are socially, culturally and geographically diverse.
If you choose to include my view in your final 20, what is involved?
We will talk to you on the telephone or meet you in person to discuss your view, your thoughts about it and agree an appropriate time for a home visit; this will depend on your availability and what is seen outside of your window at different times of the day. Between 1-3 people from Blind Ditch will come to visit you, and set up a camera to capture your view for a period of around 15 minutes. We will ask you questions about your view and record your answers on an audio recorder. We will record the natural sounds of your house and the sounds through your window also for a period of around 15 minutes.
Will I be in the film?
You will not appear in the film. We will only record sound when interviewing you. You may remain entirely anonymous if you wish.
Will you be able to identify my house from the film you make?
We want to respect your privacy and the privacy of your neighbours and will take what appears in the frame into account when selecting the views we use. We will avoid street names and vehicle registration plates when filming.
What does it mean when you say you are looking for 5 people to have a deeper experience?
Of the 20 people we interview, we are looking for 5 people who are interested in working with Blind Ditch at certain times throughout the project as the art-work and performance develops. These 5 people and their views will feature in the live performance between 16 – 22 September with live streaming being sent from their view. We would also like to work with them to devise particular sections of the live performance. Therefore those 5 people and their views will need to be available at agreed times during the rehearsal period and for the run of performances.
